Assault rifles are fed from box magazines. Most light machine guns use belt fed ammo belts.
Assault rifles don't have bipods (although the Grip Pod is a very popular accessory nowadays). LMGs have them fitted as standard, to stabilize the weapon in automatic fire and ease the weight.
Most LMGs have quick change barrels for switching out when automatic fire overheats them. Assault rifles have fixed ones that can only be changed at an armoury with tools.
Exception to these rules: some weapons considered LMGs are actually just extended barrel versions of assault rifles. They have bipods and use rifle magazines. Here are a few of these ARs on steroids and the original weapon they derive from:
MG36 - G36
L86A-1/A-2 LSW - L85A-1/A-2 (SA80A-1/A-2)
RPK - AKM
RPK-74 - AK-74
M27 IAR - HK 416
AUG (HBAR) - AUG (assault rifle)
M14A-1 - M14 (not an assault rifle, but a battle rifle)
Magazine fed 'machine rifles' not based on any assault/battle rifle)
Bren Gun
M1918 Browning Automatic Rifle
